Pages 16 to 19 of the Government of Canada's Emergency Preparedness Guide (PDF) lists all of the items that should go into your family's emergency kit. You can make your own kit, or purchase one from many retail stores. You can also order one directly from the Red Cross.
Emergency Preparedness for Children
Start by teaching kids about natural hazards, especially those in our area (tornadoes, severe storms and blizzards) and what to do when they occur. Make sure they know about your family emergency plan, including meeting places and what to do. Consider involving your kids in building your emergency kit as a hands-on way to learn about emergency preparedness.
Fire Safety in the Holiday Season
- Nearly half of holiday decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source
- One of every three home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems
- Two of every five home decoration fires are started by candles
