Snow Clearing Plan

Snow Clearing

The snow clearing plan depends on what type of event we get and will change as required. A typical snow fall event is planned out as follows. If possible, we wait a day for business owners on Main Street to clear sidewalks (dependent on amount of snow).

Day 1

6:00 – 7:30 am. The graders are on priority haul streets.

7:00 – 8:00 am. The loader cleans the Fire Hall and the Rosetown and District Primary Care Clinic parking lots.

7:30 – 8:15 am. The graders move to the AGT Center parking lot at this time due to the traffic as everyone is going to work.

8:00 am. The loader and trucks start hauling priority haul streets.

8:00 am. The backhoe with blade starts clearing alleys.

8:15 am. The graders move into clearing priority streets and then into residential streets starting at the south end of town.

Day 2

6:00 – 7:30 am. The graders are clearing haul streets.

7:00 – 8:00 am. The loader is cleaning the Elks Hall parking lot and public parking lot on 2nd Avenue West.

7:30 – 8:15 am. The graders move to the Civic Centre parking lot while everyone is traveling to work.

8:00 am. The loader and trucks start hauling snow from haul streets.

8:00 am. The backhoe with blade starts clearing alleys.

8:15 am. The graders move into residential streets.

All these times are estimates and change with the amount of snow.

Residential street clearing is done in sections:

1st Ave to 6th Ave, 6th Ave to 9th Ave, 9th Ave to 11th Ave, and may change in order they are done depending on snow fall.

The graders have snow gates that are put down at driveways and intersections. These gates help minimize the amount of snow left at a driveway but do not eliminate snow from your driveway. Depending on the size of the driveway or the amount of snow, these gates do fill up with snow and spill over leaving some snow behind. We apologize for this.

Cul-de-sacs are cleared to the side. Due to having no place to put the snow, the end piles are hauled away. That is why cul-de-sacs are cleared last.

Back alleys are cleared with the backhoe or loader pushing the snow equally to both sides of the alley. The backhoe and loader are not equipped with a snow gate like the grader is, so there is a ridge of snow left behind.

Other areas during a snow fall event:

Town facilities may take priority like the water well houses, the Water Treatment Plant, the sewer pumping station, and the Transfer Station.

The cemetery gets done when the loader and blower have completed other priority spots around town. Unless there is a funeral scheduled, then this area takes top priority.

During a snow storm, the Public Works Staff will attempt to keep important intersections open. Ex: streets that connect to Hwy 4 and Hwy 7 to help minimize the risk of getting stuck turning on and off of the highways.

The Town of Rosetown asks you NOT to push or blow your snow onto the streets or other Town property. The grader staff do notice the driveways that are cleared onto the street. Often this doesn’t affect that resident but it does affect the next house as the extra volume of snow often spills over the gate leaving a larger ridge in the neighboring driveway.

The snow clearing plan can and will change as needed by the Public Works Dept. as other priority jobs come up. Ex: water and sewer issues will take staff away from snow clearing and will increase the time it takes.
